Mahisagar, Gujarat, India

Available for Adoption: 20,000 Trees

Project Purpose
Trees for Rural Communities

Location
Plantation of trees in the community lands villages of Varsada, Kaliyari of Mahisagar district, Gujarat.

Aim

  • To address the problem of water and wind erosion in the region.
  • The trees will protect the topsoil, add to the groundwater table, thereby aiding in agriculture
  • Providing the local landless community with Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs)
  • The local species will keep the local flora intact and will help to preserve the biodiversity of the area.

Why trees?
The Food and Agricultural organisation states that trees support a wide variety of other plants that provide food both for the people and animals. They also provide firewood, fruit, honey, wax, gum etc. The Government of Australia, in its article, ‘Using Trees to Control Groundwater Recharge: How Many are Enough?’ (1999), the importance of trees to control salinity and recharge groundwater has been discussed here. The World Agroforestry Centre explains the role of a tree in the various soil building and nurturing processes like nitrogen fixation, the addition of organic material, protecting it from the wind and water. The World Wildlife Fund stresses the importance of trees in the habitat of wild animals and their conservation. Thus trees form an extremely essential part of the needs of wild ecosystems.

Flora
The tree species planted here include Karanj (Pongamia pinnata), Teak (Tectona grandis), Ber (Zizphus spp), Ardusa (Ailanthus excelsa) and Garmada (Cassia fistula).

Fauna
The bird and animal species found here include the lesser florican, hare, sloth bear,  crane, black-necked stork

Impact
The trees planted in the area will improve the agricultural conditions, by checking soil erosion and improving the water holding capacity of the soil in the arid climate. The plantation of mixed species will balance the nutrients absorbed from the soil, thus preventing the soil from turning infertile. The leaves falling from the trees will improve the humus content of the soil, reducing the need for chemical fertilisers. Along with this, they provide NTFPs to the communities dwelling in the area. The local fauna is also dependent on these native trees, and thus the plantation initiative also helps in preserving those species.

Audit for Audit for Mahisagar, Gujarat

The plantation was done in Mahisagar, Gujarat in village Kalihari - Varsada.

The total saplings planted were 25,000 in around border of the forest land in 2016-17. The plantings have been carried out as per the plan and the approximate number of saplings physically verified is in agreement with the number of saplings planted (as per the report of FES). We are of the opinion that looking to the steps taken by Grow-Trees’ partner team, i.e., the location of the site, encouragement to planting and positive response from the village to save the planting, as well as current year’s rainfall, the result of the activity will be affirmative. In agreement with the number of saplings planted (as per the report of FES).

Audit for Mahisagar, Gujarat

The success ratio of planting works to be 96%.

We are of the opinion that looking to the steps taken by Grow-Trees Partner team i.e. location of the site, encouragement to planting and positive response from the village to grow, nurture and monitor the planting, the result of the activity will be affirmative.
